Personal Exhibition
Uzupis Art Incubator
Vilnius, Lithuania
This exhibition is a playful analysis of how we all understand the same things differently. Using typography, rebuses, letter substitutions, and multiple meanings within the same word and image, the artist invites viewers to test their attentiveness and creativity. It is likely that the meaning that the viewer notices first will say something about the observer themselves. Most of the works offer both a positive and negative perspective. The collage technique and abstraction allow the artist to free both her and the viewer’s imagination. By combining object prints, photomontage, and monotype techniques, M. Liutkutė-Grigaitienė creates minimalist compositions that will make you want to pause longer than a moment. Dutch historian and philosopher Johan Huizinga proposed that the primary and most important element of human cultural flourishing is play. In this exhibition, the playful, creative, associative thinking element reigns.
Two works will “reveal all the cards.” These are prints of abstract stains, inviting visitors to take organic glass “filters” and give the work the identity of a specific object or plot. This is exactly the creative principle of the artist – by rotating the abstract stain page, changing its positions, and mentally “dressing” the shape in different ways, abstraction turns into suggestive associations and concreteness. “This emphasizes how multi-meaningful art is, and how each painting, with each viewer, creates a separate, unique harmony, a unique combination. The person themselves is a unique creator, and creates each detail uniquely,” says the artist.
The mirror will remind us – “You are unique, distinctive, you have your own point of view, but remember that so does the one whose viewpoint you disagree with.” Visitors will be able to literally decipher the overall concept of the exhibition and share it on social media platforms. This is like an invitation to “read” the painting.
