"Quarantinarium"
2020
Personal Exhibition
Uzupis Art Incubator
Vilnius, Lithuania
This is a series of works created during the quarantine. The works are inspired by the current pandemic situation – presenting observations on this unexpected new reality that has caught us off guard. The composition of masks falling into the shape of a heart invites us to “love the present moment, to make peace with the current situation.” The exhibition is as spontaneous as the pandemic itself. For a perfectionist, it is difficult to open an imperfect exhibition, but motherhood changed that, and the pandemic inspired it.
Using the collage technique (object stamp, monotype), the author presents minimalist but expressive compositions. The works in this series, like all of Milena’s creations, speak in multiple registers. The images are easily perceived and decoded, but upon closer inspection, we see carefully selected shapes, meticulously traced line trajectories. Each painting is easily verbalized, based on wordplay, avoiding illustration. The bright blue is an inseparable part of the author’s individual style. This time, a similar effect was achieved without using cyanotype. Blue “haunts” Milena, just like Yves Klein.
Each print is unique and non-reproducible, full of unexpected freshness, even for the author herself. Models reminiscent of ancient sculptures subtly suggest that calamities have struck humanity throughout history, and it is important to maintain civilization and common sense. Therefore, despite the uncomfortable circumstances, and with empathy for the tense situation, the author still invites us to look with hope.
